When I started to write this week’s newsletter I had the intention, like always, to recommend two films but I quickly realised that writing about just one of this filmmaker’s films takes up the length and effort normally reserved for two. So from next week expect regular programming but this week I’m recommending you visit/ revisit just one film.
I rewatched this film on Netflix about two weeks ago and fell in love with it all over again. There is not one shot, detail or scene that seems out of place or unfinished.
The main character portrayals are all excellent but watching it again just reminded me just how good every single performance is and how well each contributes to the overall impact of the ending. For me it is the minor character performances in Se7en that individually and collectively suck you in to this doomed city / world so effectively that you just feel broken at the end - as though these horrible things have happened to people you know and there isn't any hope for justice.
